Working in a charter school gives teachers the opportunity to be part of a vision and mission driven organization (see below for the SBCS vision and mission). The school is overseen by a non-profit Operator and Board of Directors. The Operator’s Executive Director and Board of Directors provide clarity around and protect the school’s vision and mission. The Operator’s Executive Director works alongside the Administrative Team to make decisions around staffing, resource management, partnership development and programming. In addition to a clear vision and mission, many charters also are characterized by a particular curriculum, methodology, educational philosophy, or area of focus. These often distinguish charter schools from other charter schools, as well as from non-charter schools. As a result, teachers at charter schools often have a clear sense of the “why” and “how” of teaching at their particular school, and what makes their school unique.
In Baltimore City, teachers at charter schools are members of the collective bargaining unit (the BTU). While they are technically employees of the district, they must teach and approach their work with an understanding of the Operator’s overarching vision, mission and educational philosophy. Teachers at charter schools often enjoy more support, more professional development opportunities, and more philosophical alignment than they might at non-charter schools. However, teachers at charter schools often feel that they work harder, and that the expectations are more rigorous than at non-charter schools. Ideally, the professional opportunities at SBCS make the job challenging and rewarding.
